Appearance of the SUMERIANS
Abraham and his family were from a city called Ur, Genesis 11:31- And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees. Genesis 11:28 - And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. If you don’t know who Haran was, he was Abram’s brother. Looking at these two verses you should be able to see that this is where Abram family is from.
The Bible states that after the Flood the whole earth was of one language and as they journeyed together, “They FOUND A PLAIN in the land of Shinar and dwelt there” Genesis 11:2. The Land of Shinar was a general geographic term for what is today Iraq, known also as ancient Mesopotamia. This PLAIN, as described in the scriptures, is where the people built the Tower of Babel. The name Babel is where the name Babylon derived its origin, Babel was the capital of Babylon. The book of Jasher is a creditable book, because the book is mentioned in the scriptures (Joshua 10:13 and 2 Sam. 1:18) with that being said, if you read the book, it makes mention that Nimrod's counselors built him Shinar for his palace, and Nimrod called it Shinar; (Jasher 7:42-43). Now, if you go to Genesis 10:8-10 it speaks of the cites that were in the land of Shinar, which are, Babel/Babylon, Erech/Uruk, and Akkad/Agade. Nimrod made Abram father Terah, prince of his host, he elevated him above all his princes, and they all dwelt in the land of Shinar; (Jasher 7:41,45).
This painting above, was found in Ancient Mesopotamia, it is called the Mari painting scene. The brown skinned people in the picture are the ancient Sumerians. There were tablets that were found in Sumer in which the Ancient Sumerians describe themselves as “ùĝ saĝ gíg ga” (THE BLACK HEADED PEOPLE) and to their land as ki-en-gi(-r) ('place' + 'lords' + 'noble'), meaning "place of the noble lords" One of the mighty men that lived in that generation that went by the name of SARGON the great, was the first ruler of the Akkadian Empire, known for his conquest of the Sumerian city-states, stated in his writings that he ruled over “THE BLACK HEADED PEOPLE.” Which would mean the Akkadians also knew that the Sumerians were the "BLACK-HEADED PEOPLE” or tsalmat-qaqqadi, in the Semitic Akkadian language. From the evidence cited above, the image of the ancient Sumerians, the statement from the Sumerians describing themselves as “BLACK” and the statement form SARGON the great, must conclude that the ancient people of SUMER or UR were “BLACK PEOPLE”, which would make Abraham of the bible a “BLACK MAN”. Sir Henry Rawlinson stated that the Sumerian people were recognized as AKKADIAN or CHALDEAN. Which is why when you read the scriptures (Gen. 11:31) it says Ur of the Chaldees, because the Sumerians were recognized as that, but they were not that, they were Sumerians. Hence the region in ancient Mesopotamia was called “SUMER”. Also, keep in mind that the Akkadian Empire was before the Chaldean Empire (Ancient Babylonian Empire)
It is said that the region SUMER was known as the CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION. The people in that region were known as ‘SUMERIANS’ therefore the region was called ‘SUMER.’ The name “Sumerian” is first found in Akkadian epics where it is more accurately pronounced “SHUMERIANS”. “The term SHUMERIAN according to the leading Sumerologist – Samuel N. Kramer – is derived from the name of the biblical figure SHEM!!! The word for “name” in Hebrew is “SHEM” and in Sumerian it’s “SHUMU”, meaning that the Sumerian “U” is interchangeable with the Hebrew “E”. Thus, making the name “SHUMERIAN”, a designation Not of the later Kushitic tribes in the Uruk period, but of the EARLIER Semitic tribes of the Ubaid period.” – The Sumerian; Pg. 298 By: Samuel N. Kramer
Therefore, remember ancient UR was in the southern region, Sumer, and Sumer was a region in ancient Mesopotamia. Sumer was located near the Tigris and Euphrates river.
ABRAHAM AND THE CITY OF UR
There is more evidence of its location, outside of Genesis, which comes to us from the Book of Daniel 1:1-2 that states, what happen generations later to the kingdom of Judah when they went in exile under the king of Babylon. The king of Babylon went into Jerusalem and besieged it and took part of the vessels of the house of the Most High, and he carried them into The Land of Shinar to the house of his god.
One of the cities that is NOT mentioned in Genesis 10:10 is Ur. However, when doing research, Ur was in The Land of Shinar, located in the southern region called Sumer, not too far from the cities Babel/Babylon, Erech/Uruk, and Akkad/Agade.
The city of Ur is mentioned in Genesis 11:31 when Abraham and his family left the city. Then in Acts 7:3-4, Paul refers to the Most High telling Abraham too get out of his country and from his kindred, which could only be the city Ur; ((Genesis 11:31)), in the southern region, Sumer. Also, Genesis 11:28 refers to Abram brother Haran who died, before his father Terah, in the land of his nativity, in the city of Ur. Therefore, Babel/Babylon, Erech/Uruk, and Ur in the southern region of Sumer, which is in The Land of Shinar and Akkad/Agade located in the north region in The Land of Shinar. Keep in mind, Nimrod made Abram's father prince of his host. So, while Terah was prince over all Nimrod's princes, Terah and his wife begat Abraham (Jasher 7:50-51; 8:1).
